The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of all security personnel allegedly involved in the assault of a journalist with the Class Media Group.
Mr Dwumfour described the alleged incident as a grave attack on press freedom and a blatant abuse of power, stressing that journalists must be able to carry out their lawful duties without fear, intimidation, or violence. He said any act that undermines the safety of media practitioners threatens Ghana’s democratic credentials.
According to the GJA President, preliminary reports indicate that the journalist was assaulted in the course of professional duty, an act he said violates both the constitution and international conventions guaranteeing media freedom and the protection of journalists.
Mr Dwumfour urged the police administration to treat the matter with urgency and transparency, noting that failure to act decisively could embolden further attacks against media practitioners. He emphasised that the GJA will not tolerate a culture of impunity, particularly where security agencies are implicated.
He further called on the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to conduct an independent and thorough investigation into the matter, ensuring that all officers found culpable face the full rigours of the law, regardless of rank or status.
The GJA President reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to defending journalists and promoting ethical journalism, while also advocating for improved relations between the media and security agencies through dialogue and continuous training.
Meanwhile, the GJA says it will closely monitor developments surrounding the case and consider further action if justice is delayed or denied, as it continues to push for a safe and enabling environment for journalists across the country.
