Maame Tiwaa of Asomafo fame passes on

Legendary gospel musician Maame Tiwaa, known for her longstanding role with Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo group, has passed away. She died in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, after weeks of illness.

Her death brings an end to more than four decades of music ministry marked by loyalty, consistency and a voice many Ghanaian gospel lovers grew up with. To many in the industry, Maame Tiwaa was not just a backing vocalist — she was a defining part of the Asomafo sound.

Confirming her passing, her long-time manager, Ashis, described her as someone whose dedication to the group was unmatched.

According to him, Maame Tiwaa represented rare loyalty in the creative space.

For years, her strong harmonies and commanding presence complemented Yaw Sarpong’s lead vocals, helping shape some of the most memorable and spirit-filled gospel records in Ghana’s music history. From live-band ministry to studio recordings, her delivery remained consistent and instantly recognisable.

Although her contribution to the group spanned over forty years, industry observers have often pointed out that recognition for her work came late. Her first major award nomination earlier this year was widely celebrated as overdue, but still a validation of her impact.

Born in Domeabra in the Ahafo Region, Maame Tiwaa’s journey in music began at age 10. Her gift led her to Reverend Yaw Sarpong, who later formed the Asomafo Band and worked closely with her throughout her career. The two maintained a working relationship that became one of the most enduring partnerships in Ghana’s gospel space.

Her passing has left many in the gospel fraternity reflecting on an era of live instrumentation, group performance and ministry-driven music — a style she embodied until the end.

More tributes are expected from colleagues and the gospel community as arrangements are finalised.
