High Court Judge Justice Rita Agyeman-Budu to Be Laid to Rest Nov. 22

Ghana’s judicial community will bid farewell to Her Ladyship Justice Rita Agyeman-Budu on Saturday, November 22, 2025, with a memorial and burial service to be held at the United Church, Teshie-Nungua Estate.

The respected High Court Judge, who passed away in July 2025 at age 64, is being honoured with a series of services beginning on November 19, culminating in her burial on November 22.

Born on 19th September 1960 in Kumasi, Justice Agyeman-Budu’s life story reflects a remarkable journey of perseverance, academic achievement, and dedicated public service. According to her official biography, she rose from early work as a journalist and social entrepreneur to become one of Ghana’s distinguished judges, noted especially for her pioneering work in gender-based violence courts in both Accra and Kumasi.

Her career in the Judicial Service spanned over two decades, progressing from District Magistrate to Circuit Court Judge and later to Justice of the High Court. She served with what colleagues described as “dignity, firmness, and compassion,” and made significant contributions to judicial reforms and staff discipline committees.

Justice Agyeman-Budu was also a respected figure internationally. Rising through the ranks of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) from Assistant Secretary to President of the Ghana Chapter, she helped shape national and continental conversations on justice for women and girls. She was also the writer behind the 2014 drama “A Call for Justice,” later adapted into a film broadcast on national television.

She is survived by her husband, Kwame Agyeman-Budu, their three children, grandchildren, siblings, and a wide circle of colleagues, church members, and international associates.

Justice Rita Agyeman-Budu is remembered as a gentle, principled, and inspiring servant of justice whose legacy will continue to influence generations.
