The Motorcycle Courier Union of Ghana (MCUG) has expressed gratitude to the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Ayariga, for acknowledging the vital role they play in national development, particularly in the fight against drug abuse.
In a statement signed by the Union’s General Secretary, Abugri Timothy Agengri, MCUG said the CEO’s recognition of the potential of bikers to support a safer and healthier society was both encouraging and timely. The Union pledged its continued support to the NYA’s campaign against drug abuse and its broader mission to promote a drug-free Ghana.
“Your acknowledgement of our role in promoting a safer and healthier society is truly motivating. We’re committed to supporting the National Youth Authority’s efforts to combat drug abuse and promote a drug-free Ghana.”
However, the Union also raised concerns about what it described as an ongoing challenge facing its members. According to the statement, 47 couriers have been out of work for over a month due to actions by the Tesano Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service. The Union noted that this situation has deepened the financial hardship and social vulnerability of the affected riders.
“We urge the Inspector General of Police to educate his men on the importance of partnering with motorcycle couriers, who are essential to Ghana’s economy. Harassment and job losses will only exacerbate the challenges our members face.”
The Union reaffirmed its willingness to collaborate with national institutions to build a safer and more supportive environment for the youth and for Ghana’s courier industry.
