2026 Budget: We’ll Hold Government to Account for Every Cedi Approved – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has served notice that it will rigorously scrutinise the 2026 Budget and hold the government accountable for every expenditure it seeks approval for.

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei made this known at the opening of a post-budget workshop for Members of Parliament on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the Leader of the caucus, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, she said the Minority is ready for constructive engagement but will only endorse policies that genuinely serve the national interest.

“For us in the Minority Caucus, our responsibility goes beyond criticism. We are committed to constructive engagement, supporting sound policies that advance national development while offering credible alternatives where policies fall short. Our oversight function must be guided not by political expediency but by fidelity to the Constitution and loyalty to the Ghanaian people. Oversight, in its truest sense, is not an adversarial act; it is a collaborative duty to ensure that public resources are managed with integrity, efficiency, and fairness.”

“The lessons of recent years remind us that the sustainability of our economy rests on three enduring principles: discipline, transparency, and innovation. We must cultivate the discipline to live within our means, the transparency to account for every cedi spent, and the innovation to create wealth rather than merely redistribute it. We as members of Parliament have a pivotal role in promoting these values, through rigorous scrutiny, informed debate, and constructive collaboration with the Executive.”

She also noted that although there are signs of stabilisation, many challenges persist that demand bold thinking to manage.

“The 2026 Budget comes at a crucial point in our nation’s economic journey. Ghana continues to contend with the lingering effects of fiscal strain and public debt pressures. Despite some signs of stabilisation, many challenges persist, challenges that call for bold thinking, pragmatic policy, and transparent management. The economic difficulties our people face today, whether in the rising cost of living, high unemployment, or limited access to credit, demand that we, as representatives of the people, engage the Budget with clarity, compassion, and responsibility.”

The three-day workshop brings together MPs, technocrats, and policy analysts to examine the figures, policy priorities, and economic assumptions contained in the 2026 Budget presented on Thursday by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson. The session is designed to equip lawmakers ahead of next week’s budget debate.
