The leadership of the Shime Youth Development Union (SYDU) has paid a courtesy call on Togbi Amey Zegu II, Paramount Chief (Fiaga) of Kome-Shime, to discuss urgent development needs in the area.
The meeting took place on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Togbi Amey Zegu II’s palace in Alakple. The SYDU delegation was led by Chairman Lucky Dogbatse and included John Agbamaple, Deputy Secretary; Eyram Agbenyega, Women’s Organiser; and Asiwome Tettey, a Member.
The Union unveiled an ambitious development agenda aimed at transforming the socio-economic landscape of the community and its surrounding areas. At a recent gathering of youth leaders and stakeholders, the Union highlighted critical areas requiring urgent attention to improve living standards and create growth opportunities.
Foremost among the priorities is the rehabilitation of deteriorating roads that link Shime to neighbouring communities. According to the Union, the poor state of these roads hampers transportation, limits trade, and discourages economic activity. Leaders stressed that repairing and maintaining these vital routes will ease the movement of goods and people, thereby boosting local businesses and encouraging investment.
Education also emerged as a central focus. The Union is advocating for the establishment of a Senior High School within Shime to expand access to secondary education. Currently, students must travel long distances to attend school, a challenge that contributes to high dropout rates and limits educational attainment. A local senior high school, they argue, would not only reduce these burdens but also nurture talent and prepare young people for future careers.
Improving telecommunication infrastructure was another key concern. The youth emphasised that reliable mobile and internet connectivity is no longer a luxury but a necessity for modern life. Enhanced network coverage, they said, would facilitate communication, support local entrepreneurs, and strengthen emergency response systems.
Beyond these immediate needs, the Shime Youth Union is calling for broader community development initiatives to drive socio-economic progress. Plans include fostering skills training programs, supporting small-scale enterprises, and creating opportunities for youth empowerment.
Union leaders appealed to government agencies, development partners, and the private sector to collaborate with the community in achieving these goals. They expressed confidence that with collective effort and timely investment, Shime can unlock its full potential and become a model for rural development in the Volta Region.
The visit also served as an opportunity for the youth to congratulate Togbi Amey Zegu II on his recent elevation to Paramount Chief by Togbi Sri III, the Awoamefia of the Anlo State. The Union reaffirmed their loyalty and pledged continued collaboration to drive development in the Kome-Shime Traditional Area.
Togbi Amey Zegu II, who is also the Dufia of Alakple and Hlotator of the Amey Clan, expressed appreciation for the Union’s proactive engagement and assured them of his commitment to advocate for projects that will uplift Shime and its people.
The Shime Youth Development Union, known for its community-driven initiatives, emphasised that partnering with traditional leadership remains key to achieving sustainable progress across the Volta Region.
