The Accra Regional Police Command has launched an intensive investigation into the murder of Stephen King Amoah, an Immigration Officer who was declared missing on July 4, 2025. His charred body was discovered in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area, opposite Comet Estate, in Accra on July 9.
According to an official police statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the severely burnt body was found by officers on Wednesday morning and subsequently conveyed to the Police Hospital morgue.
Investigators from the Taifa Police joined the case and were accompanied to the morgue by the complainant and six relatives of the deceased.
Despite the condition of the remains, family members were able to positively identify the body as that of Stephen King Amoah, who had not been seen since the evening of July 3, 2025.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on the night of his disappearance, Amoah left his residence at Ashongman Estate after receiving WhatsApp messages from a man identified as Bright Aweh. The messages reportedly contained images of cash, and Aweh had requested to meet Amoah at a local spot to settle an outstanding debt. Amoah did not return home, and his phone has since remained unreachable.
Following leads, police arrested Bright Aweh, who admitted during interrogation that he had given Amoah GHS 500,000 in cash. He claimed that the funds were partly meant for settling debts and partly for safekeeping, to be collected later. However, police say Aweh’s account of the events and the source of the money were inconsistent and conflicting, raising further suspicion.
The Accra Regional Police Command has condemned the act in the strongest terms and pledged a thorough investigation to bring all persons connected to the crime to justice.
They also urged the public to provide any relevant information that may assist the investigation by contacting the nearest police station or calling emergency lines 18555 or 192.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the immigration and security community, raising concerns about the safety of public officers and the increasing boldness of criminal elements in the capital.
