The largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The decision was reached during a crunch meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Addressing the press after the meeting, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, said the selected date does not require any amendment to the party’s constitution.
“The Committee also spoke about the time for our presidential primaries. And again, the Committee agrees that that decision does not warrant amendment of our Constitution. And the National Council today also made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries,” Kodua announced.
The announcement sets the stage for a highly anticipated internal contest, expected to draw interest from seasoned politicians and fresh faces eager to lead the party into the next electoral cycle.
Party officials say nomination guidelines, campaign timelines, and a code of conduct for aspirants will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
The NEC has assured party members and the general public of a transparent, fair, and credible electoral process, in line with the NPP’s commitment to internal democracy.
