‘Good Men Must Speak for What’s Right’ – Godfred Dame Justifies Role as Lawyer for Suspended Chief Justice

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has rejected claims of conflict of interest following his decision to represent suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo in her legal battle before the Supreme Court.

Justice Torkornoo filed a writ on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, seeking an interlocutory injunction to halt the proceedings of a committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions for her removal.

As part of the suit, she is also asking the Supreme Court to restrain two Supreme Court Justices—Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu—from participating in the process, citing questions over their impartiality.

Speaking to Accra-based Joy News on the back of this, Mr. Dame stated that he acted within the law and dismissed any suggestions of wrongdoing.

He also stressed his longstanding commitment to defending the integrity of the judiciary during his tenure as Attorney-General.

“It is about time that good men in this country speak for what is righteous and what is right. If there is any Attorney-General who, right from his appointment, has stood up for the judiciary and spoken against attacks on it, it is myself.”

It is not right and must be corrected. It is about time that proper things are stood for in this country. We cannot let people mislead the public and let it go uncorrected.”

The writ filed by Mr. Dame lists Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah as respondents. Justice Torkornoo is seeking an order from the Court to restrain the five-member committee from taking any further action on the three petitions seeking her removal from office.

The CJ was suspended by President Mahama under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, and the suspension remains in effect pending the final outcome of the case.
