PHOTOS: Comms Minister Sam George Tours Tech Companies, Champions Ghana’s Digital Transformation Drive

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating Ghana’s digital agenda following a familiarisation tour of key tech companies in the country.

The tour, which marks the Ministry’s renewed direction under President John Mahama’s administration, showcased the depth of innovation within Ghana’s technology ecosystem. It also underscored the Ministry’s rebranding to reflect the country’s evolving digital and innovation priorities.

The Ningo-Prampram MP began his tour at Zipline’s Medical Drone Distribution Centre in Suhum, where he commended the company’s vital role in delivering life-saving medical supplies across the country.

The Minister expressed interest in collaborating with Zipline to train 10,000 young people in drone operations, warehousing, and inventory management as part of a broader national skills development agenda.

At GrowForMe, an agricultural crowdfunding platform, the Minister applauded the platform’s role in linking technology with agriculture. He disclosed that the Ministry is developing a legislative framework and strategic roadmap to strengthen Ghana’s Agri-tech sector.

In a show of personal commitment, Sam George invested GH¢15,000 via the GrowForMe platform to sponsor a three-acre soybean farm in the Northern Region, targeting support for women farmers.

“I became the first Digital Minister to engage in crowdfunding for agriculture. This money will help them buy fertiliser and other farm inputs. It will enable them to grow their crops and eventually make enough profit to pay school fees and support their families.”

Grow For Me is an innovative web-based agricultural crowdfunding platform designed to help farmers scale their operations and grow more crops through funding from individual sponsors. The platform enables sponsors to earn a fair return when harvests are sold to accredited offtakers or traded on the Ghana Commodity Exchange.

The Minister also visited Shaq Express, a tech-based service provider, encouraging the company to apply for funding under the government’s Adwumawura Programme and explore support from the Ghana Enterprise Agency to scale up operations.

The tour ended at Huawei Ghana, where the Minister praised the company’s pledge to support Ghana’s “One Million Coders” initiative. Huawei is committing to train 100,000 Ghanaians over four years—free of charge—through a mix of online, university-based, and in-person learning, including opportunities at Huawei’s headquarters in China. The first phase, targeting 25,000 trainees this year, is set to begin soon.

Sam George expressed heartfelt gratitude to Huawei on behalf of President Mahama and the people of Ghana, describing the partnership as “transformative” and a key pillar in building a digitally empowered generation.
