Medikal Accused of Sampling Alabaster Box’s “Akwaaba” – Group Threatens Legal Action

Ghanaian gospel acappella group, Alabaster Box, has accused award-winning rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal of copyright infringement.

In a letter dated April 8, 2025, and issued by Sustineri Attorneys, the group alleges that Medikal’s latest track, “Welcome to Africa,” unlawfully samples the first 10 seconds of their hit song “Akwabaa.”

Alabaster Box is thus demanding the immediate removal of the song from all streaming and distribution platforms. They are also asking for a comprehensive breakdown of all earnings Medikal has made from the song’s promotion, distribution, public performances, and marketing efforts.

“The withdrawal of the infringing song from distribution and circulation across all traditional and digital platforms must be done forthwith,” the letter reads in part.

“We also demand an end to public performances and marketing of the track, and the termination of any contracts related to its production and promotion.”

Alabaster Box further wants the rapper to submit all contracts related to the disputed song, provide a list of individuals and entities who received copies of the track, and outline the steps being taken to retrieve those copies.

The group is also calling for an immediate halt to all marketing, live performances, and commercial activities linked to the song, along with the cancellation of any existing agreements related to its production and distribution.

In addition, Alabaster Box is requesting a full disclosure of the revenue earned from the track, as well as a list of all individuals or entities involved in its promotion and dissemination.

They have warned that failure to meet these demands could lead to legal proceedings against the artist.

The letter also warns Medikal of potential consequences should he fail to comply, including an injunction against further distribution, destruction of all copies of the song, and legal claims for damages.

“Failure to meet these demands will trigger legal action for damages, including exemplary damages for willful copyright infringement and legal costs,” the group’s legal team added.

Medikal is yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
