Historic Victory: Chairman Ashie-Moore Leads NDC to Capture 31 Greater Accra Seats

In a remarkable feat during Ghana’s December 7, 2024, general elections, the Greater Accra region of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a historic 31 parliamentary seats.

This triumph, led by regional Chairman Emmanuel Nii Ashie-Moore, represents a substantial leap from the 20 seats the party held in the 2020 elections.

At the time Ashie-Moore assumed leadership of the regional NDC in 2022, the party’s seat count was 20 out of the 34 seats in the region.

His campaign promise to increase this number to 25 by the 2024 polls has been surpassed by an impressive 11 additional seats, bringing the total to 31.

The victory marks a significant milestone for the NDC, as it is the highest seat count the region has achieved since the inception of the Fourth Republic.

In an interview with ExpressNewsGhana, Hon. Ashie-Moore expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “In 2020, we had 20 seats. Our target for 2024 was 25, but now we have added more, securing 31 seats.”

He attributed this success to the hard work and strategy employed by the region during the campaign, which focused on a “top to bottom” approach.

This included extensive grassroots outreach, door-to-door, street-to-street campaigning, traffic lights and Bus stops campaigning, in contrast to the more traditional approaches of opponents relying on billboards and large-scale events.

Hon. Ashie-Moore also credited the impact of the NDC’s 24-hour economic policy, proposed by flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, as a key factor in winning over the Greater Accra electorate.

“Greater Accra holds the offices of every Ministry, Department, and Agency, both formal and informal. It is the industrial hub of the country, and I believe the people of the region were particularly drawn to this policy,” he explained.

The NDC’s victory came despite legal challenges from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) concerning some of the parliamentary seats.

However, Ashie-Moore and the NDC remain confident that the victories were legitimate, having been duly declared by the Electoral Commission.

The parliamentary seats won by the NDC in Greater Accra include Ayawaso West Wuogon, Ayawaso East, Ayawaso Central, Ayawaso North, Okaikwei South, Okaikwei Central, Okaikwei North, Ablekuma West, Ablekuma South, Ablekuma Central, Ablekuma North, Tema East, Tema West, Tema Central, La-Dadekotopon, Krowor, Ledzokuku, Bortianor/Ngleshie Amanfro, Amasaman, Korle Klottey, Dome-Kwabenya, Ashaiman, Shai Osudoku, Ada, Sege, Ningo Prampram, Kpone Katamanso, Odododiodoo, Domeabra-Obom, Madina and Adenta.

This historic victory underscores the growing influence and appeal of the NDC in the Greater Accra region and sets a powerful precedent for the party as it looks toward future elections.
