Three people have been confirmed dead following a dynamite explosion near Gomoa Budumburam on the Accra-Winneba highway. The explosion, which occurred on the afternoon of Monday, October 14, 2024, was part of routine rock blasting activities related to the ongoing dualisation of the highway.
According to eyewitnesses the construction company typically issues warnings to vacate the area before detonating dynamite. The eyewitnesses further noted that authorities however failed to notify residents of today’s blast leading to the loss of lives and injuries.
Over 40 persons in critical condition were rushed to the St. Gregory Hospital in the aftermath of the explosion. According to Matias Ayegre, the hospital’s administrator, three of the injured later succumbed to their injuries, while 39 others are receiving treatment and showing signs of recovery.
