2024 Climate Change Week: EPA Urges Ghanaians to Embrace Greener Lifestyles

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a week-long series of activities for the 2024 edition of Climate Change and Green Economy Week, aimed at raising awareness of critical climate change issues and promoting sustainable lifestyles among Ghanaians.

At a media briefing on Thursday, October 10, 2024, the Acting Director of the Climate Change Unit at the EPA, Dr Emmanuel Tachie-Obeng revealed that the event will run from October 14 to 18, 2024, under the theme: “Greening Education: Changing Our Mindset, Changing Our Lifestyle.” He stressed the importance of this initiative, emphasizing the need for urgent action to protect the environment.

“We are slowly destroying the very resources that sustain our lives—our water, trees, agricultural crops, and soil. If we continue down this path, the consequences will be dire, and human life may no longer be sustainable,” Dr Tachie-Obeng warned.

He explained that the theme was chosen to highlight the crucial role education plays in transforming citizens’ attitudes and behaviours towards the environment.

“Our soil provides food, our water bodies give us the water we drink, and our trees provide the air we breathe. If we destroy these, our existence will be threatened. This is why we are focusing on climate education during this week,” he noted.

Dr Tachie-Obeng expressed optimism that Ghanaians would actively participate in the week’s activities to ensure a safer, greener future for all.

Key Activities for the Week:

  1. Climate Change Education Tour (with media houses)
  2. Climate Change Street Procession (from Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Efua Sutherland Park)
  3. Official Opening Ceremony
  4. National Symposium
  5. Youth Dialogue (between Japan and Ghana)

The EPA aims to use these events to mobilize citizens across the country to take tangible steps toward protecting the environment and mitigating the impact of climate change.
