Sustaining Peace a Must, Violence Not an Option – NCCE Echoes

The Juaben Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has emphasized the need to sustain the peace currently being enjoyed in Ghana. This call was made on Friday, 30th August 2024, during the launch of the district’s quadrennial Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) at the Juaben Municipal Assembly Hall. The initiative is part of efforts to ensure free, fair, and violence-free elections in 2024.

The committee comprises key stakeholders from various institutions, political parties, religious and civil society organizations, and community-based youth groups. Its primary goal is to create a platform for dialogue and collaboration among political parties, stakeholders, and citizens to address electoral concerns, promote tolerance, and mitigate conflicts.

In his address, ASP Samuel Asare, the Municipal Commander of Juaben, urged committee members, particularly political parties, to refrain from making inflammatory statements and using intemperate language, which could destabilize the country. He also reminded political parties to notify the police before organizing street processions, enabling law enforcement to ensure public safety in accordance with Ghana’s Public Order Act. He concluded by affirming the police’s commitment to maintaining peace and warned that anyone attempting to disrupt national peace would face consequences.

Mr. Emmanuel Amponsah, the Electoral Officer and committee member, updated the committee on preparations for the 2024 elections. He highlighted the success of the voter registration for new 18-year-olds and the voter exhibition exercise held across all polling stations, which he believes will contribute to peaceful elections on 7th December 2024. He urged members to actively participate in promoting a violence-free election.

The Juaben Municipal Director of NCCE, Mr. Kodjo Adjormadoh, in his keynote address, cautioned members about the type of information they share publicly, stressing that misinformation could lead to national unrest. He encouraged members to ensure their public statements are constructive and foster peace. He concluded, “Together, we can build Ghana, so let’s reject violence and embrace peace.”

Representatives from various political parties also pledged to be ambassadors of peace in the upcoming 2024 elections.
