Former President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Keta Port Project if elected to office.
According to the NDC 2024 Flagbearer, this is important to ensure the project does not become another “white elephant.”
During his campaign tour in the Volta Region, Mr Mahama stressed the need for a comprehensive evaluation before advancing the development of a new port between Ghana’s Tema Harbour and the Port of Lomé in Togo.
He pointed out the importance of learning from past mistakes, specifically referencing the Boankra inland port, which has faced criticism for its lack of progress and effectiveness.
“We will make it a priority, and as soon as I become president, one of the first things I will request is the feasibility study of the Keta Port,” Mahama stated. “Once reviewed, we will share it with the public, and from there, we can proceed accordingly.”
He also stressed the need for a specialized approach to the Keta Port, given the proximity of existing ports in Tema and Lomé.
“If there is to be a port at Keta, it must serve a specialized purpose,” Mahama added. “With Tema and Lomé already in place, we must ask whether an intermediate port would simply duplicate their functions. These factors must be carefully considered before moving forward.”
