Mole National Park Celebrates World Ranger Day 2024

West Africa’s largest national park, Mole National Park in the Savannah Region of Ghana, has joined the world in celebrating the 2024 edition of World Ranger Day, a day set aside to recognize the important work that rangers do for the conservation of the world’s significant places, including Mole National Park. As part of the activities marking the day, some of the courageous men and women who safeguard the park were honoured by the management.

The manager of Mole National Park, Chief Mahama Ali, reminded the gathering that World Ranger Day is celebrated worldwide and appealed for everyone to take the opportunity of the day to educate the masses about the importance of wildlife conservation, as it is becoming a serious problem in the country.

He praised the government for passing the wildlife law, which will help in the protection of wildlife in Ghana. He said it is high time everyone reflects on and respects their responsibility towards nature, reaffirming it for future generations.

He added that the management of the park is incredibly proud of their dedicated ranger team at Mole National Park, who inspire them with their unwavering commitment and bravery every day.

“Let’s unite in support of these remarkable men and women and express our gratitude for their tireless efforts in protecting our wildlife, communities, and habitats,” he said.

Municipal Chief Executive for West Gonja District Assembly, Musah Kusubari Karim, praised the management and staff of Mole National Park for their dedicated service to the park by protecting the wildlife for future generations.

World Ranger Day is celebrated around the world on July 31st each year on the anniversary of the founding of The International Ranger Federation (IRF), an organization that supports the work of rangers as the key protectors of parks and conservation. World Ranger Day is also a day to remember the many rangers who have been injured or killed in the line of duty while protecting national and state parks.

The 2024 theme of World Ranger Day is ’30 by 30,’ reflecting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted at COP15 in December 2022. The framework highlights the need to protect 30 per cent of land and waters by 2030, a challenge which rangers are integral to achieving.
