Napo’s brother, 5 others show interest in Manhyia South seat

The race to succeed Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South has commenced, following his confirmation as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 presidential election.

The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially endorsed Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as ‘NAPO’, as the running mate on Thursday, July 4.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his excitement about the new ticket, describing Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Opoku Prempeh as an “excellent pairing.”

He emphasised the strong combination of their experience and expertise, which he believes will benefit the party in the upcoming elections.

Following NAPO’s confirmation, the NPP has issued timelines to hold a constituency primary.

Posters of Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, the Manhyia South Constituency Treasurer and biological brother of Dr. Opoku Prempeh, have emerged, indicating his interest in contesting the parliamentary seat.

Media reports have highlighted that other potential candidates are also showing interest in the seat.

Others whose posters have emerged in media circles are Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, a private legal practitioner; one Akwasi Coker Gyambibi; the Deputy Chief Executive of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Nana Ama Timah; and the Manhyia South Constituency Second Vice Chairman of the lawyer Kingsley Bonsu Kyeretwie.

These candidates are said to have begun meeting with delegates behind closed doors, seeking support for their bids to represent Manhyia South in Parliament.
