The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has justified the appointment of Kwaku Kwarteng as the Chairman of the newly constituted Economy Committee of Parliament.
According to him, the Obuasi West MP’s new role is specifically aimed at enhancing the Majority’s capability to engage with the opposition on economic matters ahead of the December polls.
This decision follows allegations that Mr Kwarteng, who currently chairs the Finance Committee, obstructed the approval of tax waivers for companies involved in the One District One Factory initiative.
During the presentation of the business statement for next week, Mr Afenyo-Markin highlighted the strategic importance of the Economy Committee.
That announcement generated mixed reactions and surprised some Majority MPs.
Speaking to the media shortly after parliamentary proceedings, Mr Afenyo-Markin clarified the brouhaha surrounding the appointment of Mr Kwarteng.
“And so, we are challenging you to come up with your spokesperson on the economy. You have not said so officially, but we are going to make sure we have a spokesperson on the economy to challenge your Adongo. Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng is going to face him directly on the economy,” he said.
He also added that the Economy Committee although new, will be one of the most important committees in the House.
“I am letting them [Minority] know some of the proactive steps we have taken on this side of the House to throw a serious challenge that it is not just about governance. We have a new Economy Committee and it is going to be the most important Committee in this House,” he stated.
