Kenyan Protests: Ghana’s MPs Safe and Secure, Efforts Underway to Ensure Their Return – Parliament Assures

Ghana’s Parliament has assured that its Members of Parliament caught in the violent protest in Kenya on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, are safe and secure.

According to the Ghana High Commission in Kenya, the five MPs and the officer accompanying them are confirmed to be safe.

This assurance was conveyed in a press statement issued by David Sabastian Damoah, Director of the Media Relations Department at the Parliamentary Service of Ghana, on Wednesday, June 26.

“We appreciate the concern from the general public and wish to indicate that efforts are underway to ensure their safe return to Ghana,” part of the statement read.

The delegation consists of members of the Local Government Committee of Parliament, including the Chairman of the Committee, Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi; Ranking Member of the Committee, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye; Sylvester Tetteh; Thomas Ampem Nyarko; Mohammed Taferu; and Senior Principal Assistant Clerk, Anita Quartey Papafio.

The statement detailed that the delegation was on a benchmarking visit to the Kenyan Parliament when the unfortunate incident occurred.

“They were immediately escorted and secured in the Senate building and finally evacuated to their hotel by officials of the Kenyan Parliament,” the statement added.

Parliament expressed gratitude for the public’s concern and reassured that measures are being taken to ensure the delegation’s safe return to Ghana.
