A policeman has been crushed to death at the Gomoa Mpota checkpoint in the Central Region.
The tragic incident occurred around 11 pm on Friday, June 21, 2024, when the driver who was reportedly dozing behind the wheel ran over the police officer manning the barrier.
The deceased officer, identified as Stephen Nii Quaye, was stationed at the Winneba Divisional Police Command.
Initial reports indicate that Officer Quaye had stopped another vehicle at the checkpoint when the Kia truck with registration number GR-6419-N, appearing from behind, crashed into him. Before the fatal collision, the drowsy driver of the Kia truck had already hit two other vehicles—a trailer with registration number GE 5468-22 and a fuel tanker with registration number GY-2186-13.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver admitted to having been asleep at the wheel after the accident. The impact of the crash caused the Kia truck to hit the metal barrier at the checkpoint before running over the policeman.
Three passengers in the Kia truck sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital. The body of Officer Quaye has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
