Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has called on Ghanaians to reject former President John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December elections.
According to the Effutu MP, the NDC flagbearer has nothing new to offer if elected to govern the country once more.
Addressing the media in Parliament on Friday, April 19, 2024, Mr Afenyo-Markin said a government under Mahama would lack a sense of urgency in governance.
He emphasized that electing the NDC could exacerbate leadership instability within the party, and pointed out that Mahama’s eligibility for only one term might undermine the government’s effectiveness.
“We have the NDC candidate who has had the opportunity to serve as vice president and president. He’s been vice president for three and a half years before and he’s been president for some four and half years. We know his track record. He is the same person with the same old team coming to tell us that they have something to offer but we know their track record.”
Afenyo-Markin asserted that stability and focus are paramount for Ghana’s progress, suggesting that Vice President Dr Bawumia offers a more promising future than Mahama.
“He has only one term, there will be no sense of urgency. And we dare say that from day one that government will be in crisis because those party people will be struggling for who should be the next leader. Ghanaians need a stable government with focus…Dr Bawumia offers a better future than John Mahama.”
Additionally, Afenyo-Markin criticized Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, the NDC’s running mate, for allegedly failing to initiate any significant infrastructure projects in the Central Region.
