African Games: Volunteers to receive GHC 1,000 each following protests over unpaid stipends

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2023 African Games has yielded to pressure from volunteers and agreed to pay them an allowance of GHC 1,000.00 each.

This decision comes in response to fervent protests by volunteers who were left unpaid following the conclusion of the continental event.

The volunteers, numbering over 1,000, had generously offered their services for the smooth organisation of the games.

However, their altruistic efforts were met with disappointment when, four days after the Games concluded, they were abruptly asked to vacate their lodgings without receiving any financial compensation.

The ensuing protests from the volunteers prompted a resolution meeting involving all stakeholders, leading to the decision to provide financial packages. Each volunteer is set to receive GHC 1,000.00, along with an additional GHS 200.00 for travel and transport expenses.

This announcement was made through a communique released by the LOC on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, following extensive discussions with stakeholders.

The communique also stipulates that volunteers must validate their statuses by Monday, April 8, to facilitate prompt payment.

Amidst the turbulence surrounding volunteer remuneration, Team Ghana found cause for celebration on the sporting front. Hosts Ghana achieved their most successful medal haul in African Games history, clinching a total of 69 medals, comprising 19 gold, 29 silver, and 21 bronze medals.

This remarkable performance underscores Ghana’s prowess in continental sporting competitions and serves as a testament to the nation’s dedication to athletic excellence.
