Okada business has come to stay and cannot be collapsed – Mahama

Former president and leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated categorically that the motorcycle transportation industry commonly known as the Okada business has come to stay.

According to him, Okada has firmly established itself and is beyond the reach of any government intervention.

Addressing a large audience at the Agormanya Saint Martin’s Parish Hall during his Building Ghana tour in the Eastern region, Mr Mahama criticized the Akufo-Addo-led government for failing to address the current economic challenges and provide employment opportunities for the youth.

He confidently stated that no government can eradicate the Okada business in the country and proposed that if given another term, he would implement a comprehensive system involving the registration, licensing, and regulation of Okada riders. This approach aims to provide clear guidelines for their operations, ensuring a smooth and obstacle-free business environment.

The former president also highlighted plans to support local farmers in the Krobo enclaves. He announced the establishment of a farmer’s cooperative to address challenges faced by farmers when purchasing agricultural supplies such as fertilizers and seeds.

“To support farmers, each district will be equipped with a farmer service centre…These centres will offer a range of essential equipment such as planters, ploughs, tractors, harrows, and more, ensuring that farmers receive the necessary support.”

He expressed optimism that these measures would contribute to revitalizing the agricultural sector and addressing the country’s current economic challenges.

Mahama’s two-day Building Ghana campaign tour in the Eastern Region included engagements with the Regional Executive Committee, visits to Anum Palace and Koforidua Zongo Chiefs, a durbar with transport unions and traders in Agormenya, and a town hall meeting in the New Juaben South Constituency. The tour also involved meetings with professionals and students at the Asokore SDA Training College and local farmers at Ahumanhumasu Pentecost Church.

The former president will conclude his tour with a rally and roundtable discussion with party executives, emphasizing his commitment to grassroots perspectives and party unity.
