Occupy BoG: Minority suspends Tuesday’s planned protest against Governor and 2 deputies

The Minority in Parliament has announced plans to postpone their planned Occupy Bank of Ghana protest which was scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

The protest was meant to pile pressure on Dr Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his two deputies to resign over alleged acts of mismanagement.

This comes after the Financial Court 2 slated Friday, September 8, 2023, to rule on the Minority’s motion to object to an injunction motion by the Police against their planned protest.

The NDC MPs led by Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, the Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed a preliminary objection against the injunction motion.

They argued that, according to Article 88(5) of the 1992 Constitution and the State Proceedings Act, only the Attorney General is empowered to institute such actions.

The court in its ruling granted the request for an adjournment till Friday.

In the meantime, Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has assured their supporters that the protest will proceed once the court delivers its ruling.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, at the Bank of Ghana headquarters in Accra, the protest was intended to voice the Minority’s accusations of economic mismanagement by the Bank of Ghana and their call for Dr Addison’s resignation.

The police contended that the protest had the potential to disrupt public peace and sought an injunction from the court.

The court’s ruling on the preliminary objection will determine whether the protest can proceed as planned.
