A glimmer of hope has emerged in the otherwise dire situation of former Black Queens goalkeeper Memunata Sulemana. Former President John Dramani Mahama has swiftly intervened to offer assistance that promises to transform her fortunes after news went viral of her distressing living conditions.
According to a report by the Daily Post on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, John Mahama was moved by the unfortunate plight of the Ghanaian football legend and took immediate action to extend a helping hand.
The publication detailed that upon learning of Memunatu Sulemana’s hardships, the 2024 NDC flagbearer initiated measures to rescue her from her challenging circumstances. As an initial gesture of goodwill, Mr Mahama has secured a fully furnished one-bedroom apartment in the Dansoman suburb of Accra for Memunatu Sulemana. This compassionate act took place on Monday, August 28, 2023.
Sources mentioned in the report also revealed that John Mahama, through associates, intends to make a cash donation to Memunatu Sulemana. This support aims to facilitate her fresh start and pave the way for a new journey that leads to success and improved prospects.
The motivation behind Mahama’s intervention was triggered by a disheartening story previously covered by GhanaWeb. The narrative highlighted the dire living conditions of the former goalkeeper, who had been residing in a dilapidated structure in the Bubiashie suburb of Accra.
Memunatu Sulemana’s illustrious football career spanned various clubs, including Post Ladies in Ghana and Pelican Stars in the Nigeria Women’s Premier League. Despite her achievements on the field, her current circumstances depict a different reality.
While many of her contemporaries transitioned to diverse professions following their football careers, the 45-year-old Sulemana has been grappling with severe poverty. A significant portion of her earnings from football was dedicated to caring for her grandmother, who battled diabetes and required ongoing medical attention.
Before facing her recent challenges, Memunatu Sulemana served as the goalkeeper’s trainer for the Black Maidens of Ghana.
