NPP Super Delegates Conference: Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko to face off in September 2 run-off

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has revealed plans to hold a run-off on Saturday, September 2, 2023, to determine the fate of Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

This decision comes after both presidential candidates secured an equal number of nine (9) votes each in the NPP’s special presidential race, organized today, Saturday, August 26, 2023.

The Special Delegates Conference, originally intended to shortlist five candidates for the ultimate contest on November 4, 2023, faced an unexpected tie as both candidates secured nine votes, resulting in an equal footing at the fifth position.

Chairman of the elections committee, Mike Oquaye, informed journalists that if neither aspirant withdraws, the party will conduct another election on September 2 to determine the fate of Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai Nimoh.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious in the super delegates conference with an impressive total of 629 votes, accounting for 68.15% of the overall vote.

Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong secured second place with 132 votes, equivalent to 14.30%, while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen clinched third position with 95 votes or 10.29%.

The first four to sail through are Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, former Trades Minister Alan Kyerematen and former Agric Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

The party is now expected to organise the run-off to help choose the last person to join the top four ahead of the November delegates conference.

Speaking to the media at the party’s Asylum Down headquarters, Prof Mike Oquaye, chairman of the NPP delegates vetting committee, said that the tie-breaker will be decided in a week.

However, should one of the candidates drop out for another before the tiebreaker, the party will no longer go ahead with it.
