Catherine Abelema Afeku, a member of the campaign team for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Alan Kyerematen, has come forward to defend the remarks made by her candidate regarding the challenges faced under the current Akufo-Addo government.
Afeku maintained that even President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has openly recognized the existence of challenges within his administration. Therefore, she sees no issue with candidly acknowledging these challenges.
Her response comes in the wake of previous concerns raised by John Boadu, the former General Secretary of the NPP, who suggested that Alan Kyerematen’s admission of economic challenges painted the party in an unfavourable light and projected an inability to effectively support the government.
Speaking to Accra-based Asempa FM, the former Tourism Minister emphasized that Alan’s campaign team’s acknowledgement of challenges is entirely justified as there are undeniable issues reflective of the prevailing economic circumstances.
“Even our leader, our defacto leader, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has admitted that we have challenges. So, if John Boadu comes to say that when we [Alan campaign team] say we have challenges, we have not spoken well…what is there to defend? Is the cedis not at 12 cedis? Was it not at four?” she said.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is scheduled to hold a Special Delegates Congress on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
This congress will determine the final five candidates out of the ten vying for the position of the party’s flagbearer in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The chosen five will then participate in a contest in November 2023, ultimately leading to the selection of the party’s presidential candidate.
