Ato Forson clarifies: Afenyo-Markin didn’t invite me for dinner, it was Parliament’s 30th Anniversary event

The Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has reinforced his steadfast dedication to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its principles.

This comes after a viral video of him having dinner with Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin led to speculation and concerns among some NDC party members.

Speaking to Accra-based Asempa FM, the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam MP assured party supporters that his focus remains on the party’s objectives saying he will not participate in any activities that could jeopardize their cause.

During the interview, Dr Ato Forson reiterated his determination to hold the government accountable for its actions.

Setting the record straight, Dr Ato Forson clarified that his dinner with Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was not an invitation by Afenyo-Markin, but rather part of Parliament’s celebration of its 30th anniversary of multiparty democracy.

For the record, Afenyo-Markin didn’t invite me for dinner. It was part of Parliament’s 30th anniversary, so it is important I clear the air. I want to assure NDC supporters that I remain loyal and I am committed to our course and I will do whatever it takes to hold the government accountable for whatever they do which is against the country.”

“In fact, I will hold their feet to the fire of accountability. Anyone who knows me knows that I can smile with you but when it gets to my work, there is a Chinese wall and anyone who knows me knows that, and I stay true to that. That is how I am defined. That is me. I can’t change because that is what I am made of.”

“So, I can be so nice to you but it doesn’t stop me from doing my work and I will do my work judiciously.”

He emphasized the importance of clarifying this point to address any misunderstandings or misinterpretations.

Addressing the notion of multiparty democracy, Dr Ato Forson called on Ghanaians to embrace and appreciate the concept. He highlighted that diverse political parties contribute various ideas and perspectives, which do not make them enemies but rather collaborators in nation-building. He urged for unity in working toward common goals, drawing comparisons to how countries like the United States and the United Kingdom operate under similar democratic principles.

“Multiparty democracy gives diverse ideas to political parties to express their views, that doesn’t make us enemies. As I am sitting here criticising the Bank of Ghana, if they appear before the committee and they are doing well, I will praise them and when they do wrong, I must be able to say. Is that not it? And the need for us to work together to build our country.”

“That is what America is doing. That is what the UK is doing. That is what most countries are doing. For we all know that for the country to progress, we all need multi-party democracy to work.”
