The Member of Parliament for Tema East, Isaac Ashai Odamtten is demanding an urgent investigation into the deaths of two fishermen who tragically lost their lives at sea.
According to the MP, the fatal incident occurred when a boat belonging to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) crossed paths with the fishermen’s canoe, causing it to capsize.
However, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority has refuted these claims, denying any involvement in the incident.
In a statement on the floor of the House, the legislator called on security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the fishermen’s deaths.
He emphasized the need to determine whether the incident was a mere accident or a targeted attack by GPHA’s security agents, as alleged.
“There are widespread reports, Mr Speaker, to the effect that this incident occurred when a boat belonging to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority crossed these fishermen and hit their canoe thereby causing it to capsize in the process. It is against this backdrop, Mr. Speaker that I wish to call for an urgent investigation into this incident to establish the following:
- Whether this was a pure accident or a targeted attack by the Security Agents of the GPHA as has been alleged.
- Investigate the propriety or otherwise of the action of these Security Agents vis-à-vis standard operation procedure for such patrols.
- Recommend sanctions where necessary to anyone found culpable and compensation where appropriate
- Make recommendations on how these kinds of accidents can be prevented in the future”.
Furthermore, the MP appealed to all relevant stakeholders to collaborate in seeking answers and uncovering the truth behind the incident.
He urged the honourable House to take a keen interest in the matter and initiate appropriate measures to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the fishermen’s deaths.
“Mr Speaker, while the key stakeholders continue to dialogue, I respectfully invite this Honourable House to take a keen interest in this matter and initiate appropriate steps to ensure that we get to the bottom of this matter and establish the truth. This all-important issue borders on two precious lives that have been lost, the Homowo festival of the people of Greater Accra, the Fishing Community and the national closed season,” he said.
The issue is of utmost importance as it involves the loss of two precious lives and impacts the local community’s traditions, particularly the Homowo festival of the people of Greater Accra and the Fishing Community. Additionally, it raises concerns about safety measures during the national closed season.
