Take a chill pill – Sam George to Amnesty International over anti-LGBTQ+ bill brouhaha

The lead sponsor of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights And Ghanaian Family Values Bill also known as the ani-LGBTQ+ bill, Samuel Nartey George has issued a word of advice to Amnesty International to take it easy on him.

This follows a critical statement by the human rights body dissociating itself from the Ningo-Prampram MP’s participation in the recently concluded Digital Trade Summit held in Nairobi, Kenya.

In their statement, Amnesty International expressed strong disagreement with Sam George’s views on sexual minorities and opposition to the hate bill he has sponsored.

The statement signed by the Executive Director of Amnesty International Kenya, Irungu Houghton reaffirmed their commitment to creating a continent that is free from discrimination, hatred, and violence for all.

But in a sharp rebuttal, Sam George acknowledged the presence of Amnesty International at the Digital Trade Summit and expressed his satisfaction with the panel discussion in which he participated.

Taking to his Twitter handle, he also stated his anticipation for next year’s summit, where they could further discuss the convergence of technology and law. While he respected their viewpoint, he disagreed with their stance and urged them to “chill on your hate.”

Sam George has been a prominent advocate for an anti-LGBTQ+ bill alongside a group of eight members, which is currently under consideration in Parliament. The bill, enjoying the support of all 275 MPs, is expected to be passed soon and subsequently sent to the President for assent.

Amnesty International Ghana has been among the most vocal critics of the legislation, urging Parliament to reject the bill due to concerns about potential infringements on the rights of sexual minorities.
