Food and non-alcoholic beverages drive June inflation marginally to 42.5% from 42.2%

Food and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for 54.7% of June’s inflation rate.

This follows the release of the Consumer Price Index and Inflation for the month of June.

According to Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the inflation for the said period increased marginally to 42.5 per cent compared to the 42.2 per cent recorded in May 2023.

The main drivers of this inflationary trend were attributed to food and non-food items, which account for 54.2% and 33.4% respectively.

The inflation rate for locally produced items stood at 35.9 per cent, while imported items had a higher inflation rate of 44.5 per cent.

The Ghana Statistical Service highlighted that average prices of vegetables, particularly tomatoes, witnessed an increase.

Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim emphasized the importance of policymakers critically examining the factors contributing to the rise in food inflation. He highlighted the significant gap between food and non-food inflation, which has seen a 20 percentage point difference.

“At the minimum, we see a widening of the gap between food and non-food inflation. We need to focus on why we see food inflation going up. We have seen about a 20 percentage point change between food inflation and non-food inflation.”
