The government has declared next Wednesday, June 28, 2023, as a statutory public holiday in celebration of the Eid-ul-Adha celebration.
A statement issued and signed by the Ministry of Interior urged the general public to observe the day as such throughout the country.
“The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, 28th June 2023 which marks Eid-ul-Adha, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is a significant holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide for a period of three to four days. During this time, Muslims gather at various major mosques and Islamic centres to participate in special prayers.
On this occasion, Muslims often don new clothing and exchange gifts.
According to Islamic tradition, Prophet Muhammad explained that the origin of Eid al-Adha can be traced back to Abraham. It is believed that Abraham received a divine command from God in the form of a dream, instructing him to sacrifice his son, Ishmael. However, as Abraham was about to carry out the sacrifice, the Angel Gabriel intervened and presented him with a large ram. Gabriel informed Abraham that his dream had been fulfilled and instructed him to sacrifice the ram as a substitute for his son. This significant event is mentioned in Chapter 37 of the Holy Qur’an.
Eid al-Adha holds deep religious and historical significance for Muslims, symbolizing Abraham’s unwavering faith and obedience to God. It is a time for Muslims to reflect on the importance of sacrifice, generosity, and gratitude.
