The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has clarified that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) does not typically operate in a military-style manner unless compelled to do so.
While speaking about the operations of his office, he emphasized that they rarely adopt such an approach.
“We do not conduct ourselves in a military style. I am saying that if you give us the cause, we will come for you. If you give us the cause, we will storm your premises,” he stated.
Agyebeng’s comments came in response to recent events where his office obtained a court order to apprehend Charles Bissue, the former Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM). The court order was issued after Bissue failed to honour an invitation from the Special Prosecutor last month.
However, Bissue’s lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has stated that his client will not surrender himself to the authorities. Awuah argues that the arrest warrant was improperly obtained and does not imply that his client is evading arrest.
In defence of his office’s actions, Agyebeng emphasized that seeking an arrest warrant through the court does not indicate a military-style approach. Instead, he stated that the OSP should be commended for following legal procedures.
Agyebeng also highlighted that there are instances where he refrains from exercising the full extent of his office’s powers and emphasized that the OSP treats individuals with civility, considering the potential impact on their reputations.
