President Mahama Orders Immediate Release of GHS300 Million for Flood Relief, Mitigation Following Devastating Floods

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GHS300 million from the Contingency Fund to support urgent flood relief and mitigation efforts following the devastating floods that have affected parts of Accra and several communities in southern Ghana.

The directive, announced in a statement issued and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, stated that the support forms part of the government’s emergency response to widespread flooding caused by hours of unusually heavy rainfall.

According to the statement, GHS150 million of the total amount will be allocated to provide immediate relief for individuals and communities affected by the floods. The remaining GHS150 million will be invested in flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing the frequency and impact of flooding across vulnerable areas.

As part of the emergency response, President Mahama has also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies currently undertaking rescue and relief operations in the affected communities.

Earlier in the day, the President conducted an aerial assessment of the flooded areas to evaluate the extent of the destruction. Following the inspection, he announced a series of interventions intended to protect residents, support affected families, and strengthen measures to prevent future flooding.

The government has assured the public that it remains committed to addressing the immediate humanitarian needs of flood victims while implementing long-term strategies to improve drainage infrastructure and enhance the country’s resilience against flooding.
