Chairman Wontumi Finally Released After Meeting GH₵50m Bail Conditions

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has finally been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling his bail conditions.

His release was confirmed on the evening of Monday, June 2, 2025, by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua, who also acknowledged the support of party stalwart and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, for standing as one of the sureties.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, in connection with investigations into alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The case has attracted nationwide attention, especially with reports suggesting a possible link to an international organised crime syndicate, as disclosed by Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai.

Wontumi was granted bail in the sum of GH₵50 million with two sureties, both of whom were required to justify their capacity. However, the delay in providing acceptable documentation prolonged his stay in detention. His lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed on Friday, May 30, that the necessary paperwork had been completed, with Bryan Acheampong’s assets far exceeding the required amount.

Despite meeting the bail conditions on Friday, Wontumi’s release was held up due to a pending legal application seeking a review of the bail terms. The application was later withdrawn on Monday, June 2, clearing the path for his release.
